Calvary EC Church

Location: Hooppole, Illinois
Support Level: Part time
Parsonage: Yes
Sunday Morning Attendance: 20

Calvary EC Church is located at 323 Main Street, Hooppole. Nestled in the heart of Henry County, Illinois, lies the small village of Hooppole, with a population of 169 (2023). Its name is as unusual as its story. Legend has it that the area was once a haven for coopers (barrel-makers) who ventured from Rock Island searching for the pliable hickory saplings abundant in the region. The wood from these trees made excellent hoops for barrels, thus inspiring the curious name “Hooppole.”

While there are only two churches located in the village, Calvary EC and the Zion United Methodist Church, the opportunities for ministry abound. Nearby towns of Geneseo, Prophetstown, Deer Grove, Hahnaman and Atkinson are as Jesus says, “white for the harvest”.

The congregation is very involved with our EC Rock River Bible Camp and is an active part of the Midwest District with other EC Churches. The congregation appreciates a relational pastor who, “shepherds and visits and teaches us from the Bible.”
